Trauttmansdorff Castle

80 different garden landscapes and, right in the middle, a magnificent castle. The Trauttmansdorff Castle gardens always spring to mind when asking fans of South Tyrol what there is to see and do. This is mainly due to their breathtakingly beautiful water and terrace gardens and the Touriseum, which brings visitors even closer to the history of tourism in South Tyrol. Even Empress Elisabeth of Austria, affectionately known as ‘Sissi’, loved this golden, sun-drenched castle above Merano.

2005 saw a new highlight added to the gardens… the Matteo Thun’sche Gucker, a spectacular viewing platform conceived by and named after South Tyrolean architect and designer Matteo Thun. This viewing platform, reminiscent of a telescope due to its shape, guarantees you magical mountain views of the Valle dell’Adige and the Merano valley basin.

The Trauttmansdorff Castle botanical gardens and the Touriseum are open to the public between late-march and mid-November each year. In addition, the well-loved open-air World Music Festival takes place here in the summer months, drawing a great deal of visitors annually.
